You come out to feed and something looks a little off. He’s not obviously lame. Maybe it’s the way he stepped away from the gate. Maybe it’s nothing.

Every horse owner has stood in an aisle asking themselves the same question, at seven in the morning, on a weekend, when the vet is an hour away. Lameness Checker is what you turn to first.

Ten to thirty seconds. That’s the whole thing.

Equibot walks you through the exact shot before you record. Here’s the summary.

Step 1

Firm, level ground

Aisle, driveway, arena hard-track. Not deep footing. Not uphill. Not grass with divots.

Step 2

Trot in hand, straight

A helper jogs your horse away from the camera, then back toward it. Add one pass from the side if you can.

Step 3

Whole horse in frame

Hooves included. Landscape orientation works better than portrait for the away-and-back pass.

Step 4

Upload the clip

Tap Lameness Checker on the Equibot screen. Pick the video from your camera roll or record fresh right there.

A read on what it sees, not a verdict.

Referenced to timestamps in the clip you can go back and check yourself.

Apollo · 14yo Quarter Horse gelding

“At 0:04 and again at 0:11, I see a subtle head nod as the left forelimb hits the ground on the away pass. Stride length looks even; no obvious hip hike. From the side pass at 0:18, the left front toe drags slightly at breakover. This could point to the left front, but the signal is subtle. Confidence: low to moderate.”

Worth a closer look: a trot-up on a harder surface, and a quick check for heat, pulses in the digital arteries, and any resistance to a hoof tester on the left front.

Recommend a vet exam. Even a subtle read like this is worth a professional set of eyes. Share this clip and my notes with your vet when you call.

These need a phone call, not a video review.

Lameness Checker is the guided version. Video works everywhere Equibot works.

You can attach a short video to any Equibot chat, not just Lameness Checker. Up to 30 seconds. Equibot reviews the clip and references timestamps in its answer, so you can check for yourself.

What people use it for:

Equibot already knows the horse’s records — age, breed, discipline, vet history, farrier notes — so its read on a clip is specific to that horse, not generic advice you could get anywhere.

Lameness Checker is a second opinion, not a diagnosis. Equibot reviews still frames sampled from your clip, a few per second, and describes what it sees. Subtle or intermittent lameness can be missed by any second-look tool, including this one.

Every read ends the same way: this is worth a vet’s attention. Our job is to help you arrive at that call with clearer observations, not to be the call.

Equibot is an AI assistant for educational purposes only. It does not diagnose lameness and is not a substitute for a veterinary exam.

Anyone who’s ever asked “is he off?” on a Sunday morning.

Owners between vet visits

You saw something at feeding time. It’s Saturday. A quick trot-up video gives you an informed second opinion before you decide whether to page the on-call vet.

Competition riders on the road

You’re at a show a hundred miles from your regular vet. Something looks off in the warm-up. A quick clip helps you decide whether to scratch or watch it another round.

Trainers & program managers

Client horse looked stiff on Tuesday, better Wednesday, off again Thursday. Film each session, keep the clips on the horse’s record, and give your vet a pattern instead of a moment.

Boarding barn managers

Boarder texts “does he look funny to you?” before their vet appointment tomorrow. Film a trot-up, share what Equibot saw, and everyone arrives at the appointment on the same page.

Endurance & ranch riders

Long miles, uneven footing, subtle changes over months. Regular Lameness Check clips build a movement record so drift stops sneaking up on you.

Young horses in early work

Track how the movement develops. Compare the same horse’s trot-up at 3, at 4, at 5. Equibot references the earlier clip when you upload the new one.

Lameness Checker is included with every Equibot plan

A video message uses 3 Equibot credits; a regular text message uses 1. Credits reset monthly.

Frequently asked questions

Is Lameness Checker a diagnosis?

No. It’s a second opinion. Equibot describes what it sees in your video — head nods, hip hikes, shortened strides, toe drag — and helps you decide when to call your vet and what to tell them. It always recommends a vet exam. It doesn’t say “sound” or “all clear.”

How does Equibot actually read the video?

Up to 32 still frames are sampled from your clip, a few per second, and reviewed in order with timestamps. Equibot doesn’t watch the video in real time — it reads a set of still images from it. That means subtle or intermittent lameness (only visible for a fraction of a second) can be missed. That’s a real limit and we say it every time.

What kind of clips work best?

A helper jogging your horse in hand, straight away from and back toward the camera, on firm level ground, for 10 to 30 seconds. Add a side pass if you can. Whole horse in frame with hooves visible. Landscape orientation for the away-and-back pass gives Equibot more to work with than portrait.

Does the video get uploaded to your servers?

The video file itself isn’t uploaded. Only the sampled still frames are stored with the chat so you can go back to that conversation and see what Equibot was looking at. Original clips stay on your device unless you save them separately.

Can I use video in a regular Equibot chat too?

Yes. Lameness Checker is the guided starting point with the how-to-film instructions, but you can attach a video (up to 30 seconds, one per message) to any Equibot conversation — behavior, tack fit, a ride that went sideways, whatever you need a second look at.

What if my horse is obviously lame, not subtle?

Call your vet. Any horse who won’t bear weight, has sudden severe lameness, obvious heat or swelling, a wound, a suspected abscess, or a laminitic stance needs a phone call, not a video review. Lameness Checker is for the “is he off or am I imagining it” end of the spectrum, not emergencies.

How much does it cost?

A video message uses 3 Equibot credits; regular text messages use 1. Free plans get 5 credits a month, Core gets 25, Plus gets 75. That’s roughly 1 lameness check a month on Free, 8 on Core, 25 on Plus.

Does it work on iPhone and Android?

Yes. iPhone app, Android app, and web. Camera roll or file picker on all three; on iPhone you can also record fresh from inside the app.

The next time something looks off, you have somewhere to start.
